Ayurvedic Treatment for Vitiligo – A Permanent Cure

ayurvedic treatment for vitiligoVitiligo, also known as Leucoderma or (Safed Daag) is a disease that can be spotted from a large distance. If you have ever seen anyone with white patches of discolored skin on any part of their body, you have seen a person with vitiligo. Like psoriasis, vitiligo is also a non infectious disorder of the skin where the pigment producing glands of the skin do not work normally, therefore creating localized patches of pale, discolored skin. Some people have very small, localized patches of discolored skin, while others have more persistent and larger patches on their body.

The Ayurvedic Concept of Vitiligo / Leucoderma

There is a common myth about vitiligo, that it cannot be cured and that its symptoms cannot be reduced. However, this is not true. Ayurveda has a deep understanding of this condition and therefore Ayurvedic treatment for leucoderma or vitiligo is entirely possible. With a vitiligo diet which restricts intake of toxins and purifies blood naturally, the treatment of this disease is completely possible.

According to Ayurveda, skin ailments and disease are categorized under “Kusth”. Since vitiligo causes the skin to be white or ‘shweta’, vitiligo is known as ‘shweta kushtha’. Skin disorders are further divided into 18 types and vitiligo is among one of them. Since the condition is completely non infectious, ancient sages and proponents of Ayurveda have not included it in their texts. However, the modern day Ayurvedic therapists understand that vitiligo is caused due to an imbalance of the body’s inherent humors, and it is because of this that the pineal glands in several parts of the body cease producing melanin.

The Scientific Concept Behind Vitiligo : How Does It Evolve?

Melanin, which is the colored pigment of the skin, is produced by the pineal glands. This melanin protects us from the harmful ultraviolet rays of the sun, which means that those who have vitiligo are more prone to sun damage on their ski because melanin is absent. Science does not explain how or why the melanin production ceases only on some areas of the skin. Though the glands are present all over the skin, why is it that only some of the glands are unable to function, while others continue to function normally. Experts believe that this is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system destroys the melanocytes, or the glands that produce melanin. Some feel that vitiligo is a genetic disorder, inherited through generations of a single family.

The size, shape and location of the de-colored macules are not predictable. The white patches or macules could be found anywhere on the body, including the mucus membranes of the body. However, most of the commonly affected parts of the body include the hands, feet, limbs, face, groins and the trunk. For most people, the areas of the body which experience some trauma or friction are usually involved. These lesions are completely painless and continue to experience sensations. The only downside to this disease is its cosmetic defects.

How Modern Allopathic Medicine Treats Leucoderma and Why It Fails To Cure Permanently?

Vitiligo, or leucoderma – as it is also often referred to, can be treated through modern medicine. However, the treatment of vitiligo focuses on reducing the white patches or covering it up, instead of focusing on the root cause of the problem. Today, the treatment options offered for vitiligo depend on the location, size and the extent of spread. Based on these considerations, doctors recommend medication, surgery, or adjunctive therapies for this condition. Topical and steroid therapies have several severe side effects, including liver damage and sudden weight gain. Psoralen photochemotherapy is a minimally invasive yet painful procedure used to treat vitiligo. This is a therapy in which the skin is exposed to UV radiations to force the melanocytes to synthesize melanin once again. The doctor may also prescribe oral medications for the condition, which again come with their own sets of side effects.

While modern medicine has not been able to cure vitiligo completely, many people have achieved remarkable re-pigmentation through dietary restriction, prescription of appropriate therapeutic diets, and an investigation of the causative factors of the condition including tight slippers, underwear or other clothing pieces which cause pressure or trauma on the skin.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Vitiligo : Still The First Choice For Leucoderma

Vitiligo before and after yurvedic treatmentAyurveda has successfully treated many patients suffering from vitiligo. There are two types of medications for vitiligo. First is the herbal drugs and second is the herbal and mineral drugs. A lot of the ingredients used for the treatment of vitiligo have blood purifying properties or photo sensitizing properties for triggering activity in the dormant melanocytes.

While the herbal drugs work towards purifying the blood stream and detoxifying the blood – getting rid of all toxins and impurities from your body, the mineral drugs help suppress the immune system so that it does not continue to misfire and cause other autoimmune disorders. With long term use of these medications, Ayurvedic treatment for vitiligo can be successful and a combination of the two types of medications also often helps individuals. However, this treatment should continue even after re-pigmentation begins, lasting till the re-pigmentation process is complete in all affected areas. If some areas of your body respond poorly to the treatment, or the re-pigmentation is poor around some areas, you may use some camouflaging techniques to cover up these small areas.
