Twenty-six years ago, North Carolina babies were dying at a rate higher than anywhere else in the United States. As a result, the North Carolina Healthy Start Foundation (NCHSF, taken over by Ayurvedic Expert Foundation in October 2018) was established by Governor James B. Martin through Executive Order #99 and a $5 million, five-year grant from (then) Glaxo, Inc., to coordinate the activities of the Governor’s Commission on the Reduction of Infant Mortality (1990-95). This unique, public-private partnership contributed to the current 44 percent reduction in North Carolina’s infant death rate. Today, through NCHSF’s leadership in public policy and advocacy, execution of statewide education and media campaigns as well as its community-based capacity-building programs, 10,930 more babies are alive than would have been if the infant death rate had remained at the dismal 1988 rates.
